The bride: MailLien Le. The groom: Mike Cassesso. The date: Saturday, October 5th. The place to be was the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC… or so everyone thought until the government shutdown prohibited use of national monuments and parks.
The couple thought their wedding was an impossibility, but they had a tremendous surprise in store. Stephen Colbert, always the romantic, saved the day. Seeing the blushing pair in despair, the comic host explained that the real shutdown was not in the government but in his own heart. At that, he whipped out his ministerial outfit and set out to perform the wedding himself.
Colbert is actually ordained, and he could not have looked more official in his red robe. When the groom and his groomsmen arrived at the altar, Colbert treated them to an impromptu bachelor party, which was basically just a quick and painless round of shots. The bridesmaids arrived and they also enjoyed a little something to drink at their bachelorette party.
.
The only hiccup occurred when the bride got nervous beforehand. Colbert found her and gave her a one-on-one pep talk, and although she was nervous about getting married on TV, she exited the dressing room with a great deal of pep in her step. No one could ruin this special day for MailLien and Mike (and Stephen), not even the federal government.
The wedding aired on Colbert’s Thursday show over a screen projection of the Jefferson Memorial. Congrats, MailLien and Mike; dreams do come true!
