On my trip to MoCCA back in June, I met so many cool ladies I didn’t know what to do! Luckily, since then I’ve had some time to catch up with some of them.
Monica Gallagher self-publishes everything through her website, eatyourlipstick.com, and her comics range from the autobiographical to the fanciful, with breast size, Greek gods, and murder-for-hire all given a shot.
Boobage, shown above, is Gallagher’s story of growing up with extra-small breasts, and is a look at the idea that thin girls don’t get body image issues. Gods and Undergrads, meanwhile, is a webcomic (also available in pretty full-color print!) about a college student who’s always been a little strange, figuring out just how different she really is.
My favorite (because I’m just vicious like that) was Lipstick and Malice, a stereotype-flipping story of a supermodel/superassassin. Part Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and part Kate Moss, Nona La Bete’s got the looks that kill.
Gallagher’s art is fetching and fun, and her stories showcase all that’s great and all that’s frustrating about being a girl. You can get her books at Midtown Comics in NYC and other stores, through her Etsy store, or through her website.
