Meryl Streep keeps it real. Her speeches are decidedly impeccable, her talent leaves me consistently awed , and she’s also…*drumroll* a feminist. Her recent work includes mailing letters to all 535 members of Congress to garner support for the Equal Rights Amendment.
The proposed amendment, originally passed by Congress in 1972, missed full ratification by just three states. Last year, however, supporting individuals and organizations formed the ERA Coalition with one badass goal in mind: pass the ERA now (a sampling of members includes Chelsea Handler, Jane Fonda, Jimmy Carter, Taylor Schilling, Rashida Jones, and Gloria Steinem, so it’s basically the feminist super-group of your dreams). Currently, the Constitution doesn’t protect women from discrimination on the basis of sex, a truth made more embarrassing by the fact that our country encourages other countries to adopt similar provisions (weird, right?).
Meryl’s letter points out the ERA’s potential to provide “meaningful benefit for the whole human family.” Her letter also rallies Congress members to “stand up for equality.”
Bravo. Streep’s letter even came accompanied by a copy of Equal is Equal, a book by ERA Coalition founder Jessica Neuwirth.
I’m all in, BUSTies. Pro-Meryl, pro-ERA, pro-letters by mail. Especially when they’re hand-signed by living legends #fangirling
