Rep. Maxine Waters Reclaims Her Time (Again)
Rep. Maxine Waters stood firm against Rep. Mike Kelly (a Republican) during a debate about rolling back Obama-era auto lending guidance, which Republicans successfully reversed so that the new guidance didn’t address discrimination in auto lending. When told to stop arguing with Kelly by Kelly’s fellow Republican Tom McClintock, Waters said, “You did not interrupt [Kelly] when he was making those outrageous remarks about him knowing more about discrimination than I know about discrimination. I resent that, and I resent the talk about making America great again. He’s down here making a speech [about] this dishonorable president of the United States of America… and no I don’t yield (to Kelly), not one second to you. Not one second. 19-year-old Sudanese woman Noura Hussein has been sentenced to death for fatally stabbing the man she was forced to marry, who she says raped her while his relatives held her down. Another Horrifying Police Sexual Assault Case Makes Headlines
Kentucky police detective John W. Nissen has been accused of a particularly horrifying incident of sexual assault: an anonymous woman went to Hillview, Kentucky police officers to report that she’d been raped by a police officer from a neighboring Bullitt County department. Nissen was assigned to take the woman home, but instead he took her to a hotel and demanded oral sex. Read more at WSBTV.
Delaware Becomes The First State To Ban Child Marriage
Delaware has become the first state in the US to ban child marriage, setting the minimum age of marriage at 18 (previously, minors could get married with the approval of a judge). Read more at The Hill.
We Need To Talk About Maternal Morbidity
We know the US has a high maternal mortality rate—but we also need to talk about the maternal morbidity rate. In collaboration with ProPublica, NPR reports that for every woman who dies in childbirth in the US, 70 women nearly die. While interviewing mothers who nearly died after giving birth, NPR found that many had expressed concerns about their health that were not taken seriously by doctors. Read more at NPR.
