The GOP debate audience may be one of the most interesting characters in this primary election cycle. They kind of remind me of an old-timey angry mob, unabashedly reveling in their hatred. So far they’ve conspired the death of a hypothetical uninsured man, booed an active duty soldier for being openly gay, and cheered wildly at the mere mention of the death penalty. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these days the camera panned around to show the crowd holding pitchforks and torches. At Wednesday night’s debate, the audience reacted wildly inappropriately to yet another question, this time regarding birth control. Birth control. Wow!

Which candidates believe in birth control? I hope all of them believe in birth control because virtually all women (over 99%) use some form of it, and many take the pill for health reasons that don’t involve pregnancy prevention. Birth control is basic healthcare. The pill came around over 50 years ago, so why are we all of the sudden not cool with it? Is it because President Obama is making it accessible to everyone, not just the people who can afford the outrageous monthly cost?
I’m going to pretend that the crowd is booing the fact that this is the latest hot topic in an election where the economy should be the focus.
