GENDR, the world’s first app developed by and for the gender variant and queer community, launched July 12. This app creates a space where people who identify along the spectrum can connect, share their stories, and build a community. The app allows users to chat, send photos, meet people nearby, and “celebrate the people, products & places that connect to the continuum of human sexuality & gender identity.” GENDR also provides educational services that include transition tips, makeup tutorials, and gender neutral apparel, as well as breaking news, health resources, nightlife, trends, and travel tips.
Two friends made the app after recognizing there wasn’t a current space that they felt was explicity for queer and gender-nonconforming people. In an article on out.com, a GENDR co-founder said, “We developed a private, members-only app for our worldwide community. The memberships help pay for building and operating expenses of our global app, but we also hope the fees will deter bullies from joining our community. No bullies allowed!” It currently costs $5 a month or $30 a year to be a member of GENDR.
Thus far, the app has been received quite well. With one user saying, “This is the community I was desperately looking for,” and another, “I really do love this app. I’ve met lots of lovely people and actually feel validated!” We hope the app continues to be a supportive, positive space for gender variant and gender non-conforming people, and hopefully one day it could even be free!
