Although we’re fresh off the new Beyoncé-Nicki collaboration that has quite literally rocked the internet, we may have another duo of fire starters partnering up soon.
A few days ago, Miley Cyrus turned her Instagram into a one day, mini-shrine to one of music’s most prevalent and influential feminists: the one, the only Kathleen Hanna. She threw out a couple pro-Hanna comments, like “coolest ever” and “f*** yeah… #girlsrule”. Given that Miley is one of the most controversial feminists in pop music, the internet definitely had something to say about it.
Buzzfeed collected a series of tweets from people who found her posts to be either too late to the riot grrrl party, or those who encouraged her to see past her previous cultural appropriating ways and adopt some of her newfound hero’s ideas on intersectionality:
Whichever way you see Miley’s quasi punk/feminist awakening (I myself totally endorse it), the Bikini Kill (and Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin) singer totally embraced her new comrade:
“Hey @MileyCyrus,” Hanna tweeted, “so sweet you posted pics of me…have an idea for an album that only you are daring enough to make.”
As other posts about this fantasy collab have cited, Hanna has previously been supportive of Cyrus’s feminism in an interview with Tiny Mixtapes:
“Well, I’m glad the word “feminist” is being talked about and that influential pop stars are bringing up this conversation. If she says she’s a feminist, then who I am to stop her? I’m not the feminist police. I don’t get to determine that. I’m happy that young women are embracing that term, for whatever…it means to them. Maybe for her it’s about freedom of sexuality and freedom of expression. For other people, it’s about ending oppression against everyone, not just women, but you’re starting from a woman’s perspective because that’s what you’re interested in. You know your feminism isn’t about white women climbing the corporate ladder. So maybe Lily Allen’s feminism is different from Miley Cyrus’, and there’s room for everyone at the table.”
SO commence freaking out. I, for one, would love to see riot grrrls climbing the Top 40s chart and bringing a more accurate definition of feminism to the mainstream. Fingers crossed!
