After six years of hiatus, the VH1 Hip Hop Honors are back, but this time they’ll be celebrating the work of all the women who have pioneered the genre over the past couple decades. At the center of all this is Missy Elliott, who will be honored at VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens by many people she’s influenced and worked with over the years in the industry. This includes Pharrell, Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, Remy Ma, Trina, Eva, Tweet, Keyshia Cole, Raven Symone, Fantasia, and Jazmine Sullivan, but there are even more!
Missy Elliott broke new ground for women in hip-hop by defying the sound and look of others in the genre at the time and finding unfounded success in that defiance. Her music videos are legendary, with “WTF (Where They From”) being her most recent and extremely successful. She’s won five Grammys, gone platinum six times over, and all while innovating the hip-hop genre by doing what she does best: herself.
VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens will air July 11th at 9PM ET. Tune in to celebrate this feminist legend along with a heck of a lot of other women who are owed an awards ceremony dedicated only to them. Until then, rock out to a little classic Missy below!
