Not Your Mother’s Meatloaf: a Sex-Ed Comic Book

by Krista Ciminera

The creators of Not Your Mother’s Meatloaf, a sex education comic book, realize the importance of raising awareness about infrequently talked about topics in a way that will easily and readily catch interest.  Started in 2008 by Liza Bley and Saiya Miller, Not Your Mother’s Meatloaf balances serious topics like consent, safe sex, and sexual health with the fun, engaging format of illustration.  In an effort to make the zine as inclusive and accessible as possible, Bley and Miller have open calls for submissions, and their first two issues are available for free download off of their website or for $3 from Microcosm Publishing.

The theme for their upcoming third issue is “Bodies,” and they are accepting submissions until May 1st.  You can catch them at the Queer Comic Series at NYU on April 15th, where they’ll be teaching a workshop on zine making, comic creation, and self publishing.  Now is your chance to forever immortalize your favorite hot, goofy, or awkward sexual experience into comic form!
