I’ll be the first to admit my nerdiness. One of my favorite things in the world is talking about books, so naturally I am a big book club fan. Unfortunately, my favorite book club members keep having the audacity to live in different places than me and I’m tired of it! Well, now we finally have a solution: Book Glutton.
This wonderfully named site gives people the opportunity to read books online together while recording public comments on them and discussing them with other readers. You can either join in the completely open discussion or create book clubs with your friends or people with similar interests. There’s even an option to close the discussion to the section you’re reading so the story doesn’t accidentally get ruined for you (hate it when that happens).
The one problem with what could potentially be a great idea is that, due to a combination of being in Beta and copyright laws, Book Glutton’s catalog of books available to read is seriously lacking, especially when it comes to female writers and literature written after 1920. I started a group for BUST but unfortunately couldn’t find anything appropriately BUST-y for us to read. It is possible to request a book, though, or upload one of your own if you can find it elsewhere online. I’ve suggested ‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood and ‘Lolita’ by Vladimir Nabokov. Watch the Book Glutton intro video below and if it seems appealing create an account, join the group and message me your suggestions (or request them yourself). Hopefully we can get something working one way or the other because how fun would that be? Answer: very. -Celeste
