Torres is the stage name of Mackenzie Scott, who has been releasing albums and performing under the pseudonym since 2013. Perhaps it’s the singer’s background in musical theater that colors the fun-fair aura of “Life as We Don’t Know It,” a track from her forthcoming sixth studio album, What an Enormous Room. “If you’re here it means you’ve survived your own death sentence,” she sings on “Artificial Limits” over ominous organ and guitar textures. “So, rest in pleasure now/No more artificial limits.” The magisterial, choral qualities of “Forever Home” and the ethereal “Songbird Forever” are transportive, beautiful meditations that demarcate the range Torres delivers on the project.
