Lene Lovich’s recordings for Stiff Records between 1978 and 1983 are now being released as a comprehensive box set. Lovich arrived on the scene with over-the-top style and an extremely high vocal range. She not only sang but also warbled, screamed, and made unusual sounds, similar to those made famous by her friend Nina Hagen. Lovich’s unorthodox fashion sense, voice, and fresh, edgy, pop/rock sound combined to catapult her to the center London’s New Wave music scene.
These four discs contain both the original mix and the subsequent U.S./U.K. remixed version of Lovich’s debut album Stateless and the three that followed: Flex, New Toy, and No Man’s Land. Hit singles “Lucky Number,” “Bird Song,” and “New Toy” are included, as well as deep cuts like “Home,” “Joan,” and “Special Star.” All 81 tracks have been remastered, with over 20 songs making their debut on CD, including B-sides, early versions, 12-inch versions, and liner notes from Lovich herself. This collection is an excellent introduction to a unique artist whose visionary work has stood the test of time.
