Mmmmmmm Ward.

I’ve always been a fan of this Portland, OR, based crooner’s scratchy voice and rockin’ piano/guitar skills, so getting to see him last night at the Apollo (not nearly as big as it looks on TV! Who knew?) was nothing short of awesome. He played a few slow jams by himself, opening with the title track, ‘Hold Time,’ off his brand new album, then rocked out with his band and even brought a few members of Brooklyn Americana crew Oakley Hall out on stage (loved those ladies’ harmonies!). He threw in some pretty rad covers too like Chuck Berry’s ‘Roll Over Beethoven,’ a John Fahey tune, and my fave of the night, Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On.’ So good! Click here for the rest of his tour dates, and check out his performance on Letterman earlier this week below.

P.S. I’m totally kicking myself for getting there late and missing the Vivian Girls ENTIRE SET!!! Gah! Since when do shows start at 8??
