In a horrifying example of rape culture, a Spanish judge interrupted a rape survivor’s testimony to ask, “Did you close your legs properly? Did you close off your female organs?”
The story of the trial is currently making international headlines after Clara Campomor, a Spanish women’s rights organization, filed a complaint against Judge Maria del Carmen Molina — who is a woman! — for her inappropriate question.
“This question is offensive, degrading and humiliating,” Blanca Estrella, president of Clara Campoamor, told the Daily Telegraph. “It shows a complete lack of professional rigour and ethical treatment of the victim.” She added that the judge “showed obvious disbelief of the testimony of the victim, questioned her without allowing her to answer, asking leading and offensive questions.”
“Such questions are not only unnecessary to the investigation but are completely offensive and violate the dignity of the victim,” Estrella said.
The survivor, who is five months pregnant, wasn’t even trying to send her rapist — her former partner — to jail. She was simply seeking a restraining order against him, on the grounds that he “repeatedly abus[ed] her both sexually and physically.” She told Clara Campoamor that she was “shocked” by the judge’s line of questioning.
El Campoamor is demanding that Judge Molina be suspended or removed and said that other women had complained about Judge Molina’s attitude towards women filing complaints of domestic violence.
