Graphic novels are awesome, hands down. From Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by author, and recently-named 2014 MacArthur Fellow, Alison Bechdel to Persepolis by novelist/ director Marjane Satrapi, some of my favorite books are graphic novels, which is why I was so psyched to see that “Female Force” is issuing a new comic book about the lives of Angelina Jolie, Arianna Huffington, Melinda Gates and Gloria Steinem.
“We wanted to showcase the strong women of today’s society that have inspired generations and shaped the culture of today,” said Bluewater Publisher Darren Davis in a recent press release, and they did! The 96-page graphic novel celebrates the lives of these women by recounting their stories of activism, and the success of their efforts to make the world a better place. Previous women featured in “Female Force” include past Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor. Seriously impressive!
Graphic novels are great to read as adults, but can also prove helpful for young, reluctant readers (depending on the content). In an effort to promote literacy in schools, graphic novels are often given to students who may not gravitate towards traditional texts. They can cultivate kids’ and teenager’s ability to visually gather information about the world and prompt literacy and understanding, making them a vital educational resource.
“Female Force” also makes an effort to showcase women to whom their readers can look for inspiration, as well as act as a reminder that not all comic book stars have to be men or boys.
Are there any other women that you would like to see the publication focus on? Share them here!
