Rookie seems to do no wrong, and the release of their new grrrl power anthem “Go Forth, Feminist Warriors” is a perfect example of their flawlessness.
Jessica Hopper, Rookie’s music editor, hatched the idea for a feminist version of “We Are the World” in the same place she gets most of her inspiration; the shower. Armed with the killer idea, she enlisted the help of Katy Davidson and Marianna Ritchey from the song writing duo Lloyd & Michael. Sarah Dougher, a Women’s Studies professor and musician, contributed lyrics, as did the entire Rookie staff. They contacted dozens of artists for collaboration (many of which you can hear on the track) and pieced together various tracks sent by email and magically (aka through the expert use of technology and engineer/producer Chad Clark) one massive track was compiled: “Go Forth, Feminist Warriors.”
My standout lyrics:
“The enemy is not within us, the enemy is what prevents us”
and
“Our body, our choice/a tumblr, a voice”
This upbeat song stars Kate Nash, Kimya Dawson, Tavi, Thao Nguyen, Tegan and Sara, Psalm One and countless others, and even includes a freestyle rap from Carrie Brownstein about pizza. It’s amazing to see (hear?) that the song itself embodies the empowered community its lyrics describe. How feminist is that?!
